LEMUEL GANDARA
Lemuel Gandara was born in 1984, in Goiânia, and has lived and produced in Brasília since 2013. His artistic repertoire is expressed in paintings, illustrations, crafts, textile art and cinema. He holds a PhD and Master's degree in Literature from the University of Brasília (UnB) and is an Educator at the Instituto Federal de Goiás, in Formosa. His works have been exhibited and published in Brazil and abroad in salons, biennials, festivals and specialized magazines. In 2024, he was in the TOP 20 of the Togetherness exhibition, held by the D31 Art Gallery, in the United Kingdom.
“I gather worlds from the bowels of the earth: perennial composition and decomposition; transmutation of organic universes in the timeless exercise of life, death, transcendence and art.”
Technique
Textile art
Fashion is one of Gandara's greatest sources of influence. This area of knowledge has been part of his academic research, especially in his award-winning master's dissertation, and has allowed the artist to delve into the world of threads, fabrics, weaves, and sewing and collage techniques. This was the gateway to textile art and its sensorial and aesthetic dimensions that question the form and material of art. Crafts such as embroidery and handicrafts are fundamental aspects of his experimental productions.

Themes
Alchemy of the absurd
Alchemy of the absurd presents paintings and objects that deal with the relationship between humanity and nature, with a focus on the Cerrado. After bibliographical and immersive research in regions of the state of Goiás and the Federal District, Gandara is developing works that present to the public points of tension and also transcendental nuances of organic forces founded and living in the biome and important for the natural and symbolic heritage of the people who live in the Cerrado, whether in the countryside or in the cities, in dialogue with themes that are already part of his production, such as time.
Portfolio 2024
From the shell to the cosmos
The thematic line that organizes Gandara's works and actions presented in his 2024 Portfolio is From the shell to the cosmos. This idea marks the crossing of the creative genesis to the multiplicity of contemporary languages that break the boundaries of time and space from the organic worlds that do not submit to light and that only exist when embodied in art.
The organic language of Gandara
Each work of art is unique, as are the elements that compose it. Lines, shapes and autonomous colors connect to create scenes, landscapes and sensations that come to life in the inner world of the audience. These are the layers of language that artist Lemuel Gandara works with in his productions, which remind us of atoms, cells, celestial bodies and all the organic movements that build a living body full of meaning.
A studio with minimal waste
The Lemuel Gandara Studio is a laboratory for artistic and chemical experimentation where the artist's research is centered on the Cerrado. As a way of contributing to a more sustainable world, the artist works with the idea of minimal waste, in which the leftovers from the process of creating one work give rise to others.
Featured works
The selected works reflect my research. We have a textile artwork, a painting from the Alchemy of the Absurd series and my master's dissertation.
Will-o'-the-wisp, 2024
Life, death and transcendence through flames. The work is the result of research on natural fire in the Cerrado biome (one of the most deforested in Brazil) and how this element is fundamental in the process of decomposition and rebirth of native vegetation. The colors and shapes are interpretations of the will-o'-the-wisp based on chemical studies in dialogue with stories stemming from the popular culture of the people who inhabit the Brazilian central plateau, where the national capital Brasília is located.
Roots of the future, 2024
After researching the tones of the post-fire Cerrado, I created Roots of the Future. It is inspired by the renewing power of the biome's natural fire and it took countless layers to achieve the shade of black that I had designed for the canvas.
Jane Austen in literary cinema: collective translation and dialogism in the great age of the arts (2013)
In the time of the fictionalized word, Jane Austen lives and transcends. In the time of the film, she is updated, animated, and seductive. In the great old days, novels and films are watched and watched. It is in this temporal relativity that is characteristic of art that the boundary between the sheet of paper and the screen for exhibition resides. In order to contribute to the first reception and to those that have converged over the years, we propose a theoretical and critical reflection on the author's five novels that were translated into the seventh art: Sense and Sentiment (1811), Pride and Prejudice (1813), Mansfield Park (1814), Emma (1815), and Persuasion (1817).
